New In: Labster’s Latest Simulations

With the current shift to online learning in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the entire team at Labster has been working around the clock to ensure teachers have sufficient tools and resources to continue delivering education to students everywhere.

In response, we have made access to our virtual labs free of charge to high schools and discounted pricing for higher education institutions so as to limit the disruption of science classes around the world.

Though we are still working hard to help guide teachers to implement Labster in their courses, we’re also working on more additions to our simulation catalog to make sure there is something for everyone across science education.

In this latest round-up of our latest simulations to be launched, read on to find the latest additions to our Anatomy & Physiology virtual lab simulations and Organic Chemistry package, and four of our latest biology virtual labs for Ecology and Cellular & Molecular Biology.

Expanding our Anatomy & Physiology package

In our Anatomy & Physiology lab simulations, students will learn how cells make up organs and systems, and how a well-regulated communication between all of them makes the existence of organisms possible. Students will be able to study human physiology and discover how different organs in the body keep the body functioning.

Now, we’ve added two exciting new simulations to expand our current A&P package.

1. Muscle Tissues: An overview

Explore the distribution and function of the three different muscle tissues found in the human body. Examine them down to the cellular level and dive further into their molecular structures to reveal the fascinating mechanisms behind muscle contractions.

Highlights:

  • Interact with the anatomical 3D holograms to explore the distribution and main functions of the different muscle tissues in the body.
  • Examine muscle tissues at the cellular level with 3D cellular models.
  • Observe how a muscle cell contracts with immersive animations and models of a sarcomere.

The Muscle Tissues simulation is concept-based, appropriate for university/college courses, and VR-compatible.

2. Homeostatic Control: How does the human body keep itself in balance?

Visit the Homeostatic Control lab to learn all about the concept of homeostasis and how it can be applied to a wide range of systems, from blood pressure to body temperature.

Highlights:

  • Observe homeostasis in action by testing different settings on our virtual volunteer
  • Identify the actors in homeostatic regulation pathways through interactions with a 3D model of a human body

The Homeostatic Control simulation is concept-based and appropriate for university/college courses.

Filling the gaps: even more new virtual labs for biology

This month, we want to ensure that our virtual labs can cover a wider range of learning objectives within the biological sciences. Here are our latest lab simulations for biology:

1. Cell Membrane and Transport: Learn how transporters keep cells healthy

Discover the structure and function of cell membranes by launching cargo molecules at a virtual cell. Apply your learning back in the lab to improve the health of synthetic cells that the lead researcher wants to use to produce insulin.

Highlights:

  • Understand the real-world context of cell membrane and transport by helping out in a synthetic biology lab.
  • Have first hand experience of the importance of selective permeability through interactive learning activities.

The Cell Membrane and Transport simulation is concept-based, suitable for both university/college and introductory/high school classes, and VR-compatible. 

This is a core simulation for the following courses: General Biology, Intro Biology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, Biotechnology, and Food Science and Nutrition. 

It can also be relevant for the following courses: Microbiology, Biochemistry, and High School Biology.

2. Cell Structure: Cell theory and internal organelles

Explore a forest to discover the cellular structures of various organisms to help determine what a bear ate before it died. Build the structure and choose the internal organelles of the four basic types of animal cells.

Highlights:

  • Engage students with free exploration learning activities and investigative storylines.
  • Build larger-than-life versions of each of the four animal cell types on the holofloor.

The Cell Structure simulation is concept-based, suitable for both university/college and introductory/high school classes, and VR-compatible. 

This is a core simulation for the following courses: General Biology, Intro Biology, Biotechnology, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Anatomy & Physiology, and Food Science and Nutrition.

It can also be relevant for the courses: Biochemistry, and High School Biology.

3. Biomes: Identify and create the main biomes on Earth

Learn about the main biomes on Earth and where they are located with our new Biome Generator. You will be able to adjust different parameters to build your own biome and observe the result of your changes instantly!

Highlights:

  • Freely experiment and adjust different parameters to build your own biome with our new Biome Generator.
  • Try as many times needed to re-create Earth’s main biomes; our friendly in-game lab assistant Dr. One can help point you in the right direction.

The Biomes simulation is concept-based, suitable for both university/college and introductory/high school classes, and VR-compatible. 

It is a core simulation for the course Ecology, General Biology, Intro Biology, and High School Biology.

4. Trophic Levels: Grazer vs. predator

Experience first-hand how energy is transferred within a food web and between trophic levels. In this simulation, students will guide a zebra towards a feeding ground by interacting with organisms in different trophic levels.

Highlights:

  • Receive immediate feedback upon exploring food webs and trophic levels in this short simulation with an engaging storyline.

The Trophic Levels simulation is concept-based and suitable for both university/college and introductory/high school classes.

It is a core simulation for the course Ecology, General Biology, and Intro Biology, and may be relevant for High School Biology courses.

Completing the Organic Chemistry Package: Substitution vs. Elimination

The latest simulation to join our current Organic Chemistry simulation package is Substitution vs. Elimination. Explore all our virtual labs for organic chemistry here.

Substitution vs. Elimination: Predict the outcome

Join Dr. One in the lab to investigate how several types of substitutions and eliminations are competing with each other in organic chemistry. Predict, mix and observe the outcome!

Highlights:

  • Students will be challenged to form and test hypotheses on the outcome of chemical reactions.
  • Free exploration is encouraged, with the option to reset the reaction vessel to test hypotheses.

The Substitution vs. Elimination simulation is concept-based, suitable for university/college courses, and VR-compatible. 

It is a core simulation for the courses Organic Chemistry and General, Organic and Biological Chemistry.
